Washington Redskins To Change Name to Red Tails?

Dallas Cowboys v Washington Redskins

Hail to the Red Tails? Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it. If a DC council member has his way the Washington Redskins will abandon its controversial Native American moniker that it has long held since 1932. Councilman David Grosso said he plans to submit a resolution that the Redskins drop their “racist and derogatory” team name. He suggests that the NFL team replace its name to the Red Tails, which honors the Tuskegee Airmen. They were recently re-popularized by a George Lucas-produced blockbuster movie of the same name. But that is just a suggestion, he told the Washington Post. Part of the problem with revamping such a historic team’s brand is finding something as worthy to replace it with and that’s actually the best alternative name I’ve heard, so far. It pays respect to African-American history and keeps the “Red” association going so you probably won’t even have to change the team colors.

ESPN:

Grosso told the Post that two other members of the 13-person council have agreed to sign the resolution, which would be nonbinding. The Examiner reported that at least eight members of the council support it.

“We have to change it, and I’m calling on [owner] Dan Snyder and the NFL to step up and do the right thing,” Grosso said, according to the Examiner.
